Scaffolding as an EFL Teacher Skill
The term "scaffolding" was first used in an educational context in the mid-1970s by the American psychologist Jerome Bruner. The term is a metaphor to describe the type of (verbal) help a teacher or peer provides to a student to support learning. The metaphor is related to the meaning of the word scaffolding, that is, a temporary structure that is installed during the construction or renovation of a building and that is removed after the completion of each part of a new building. Scaffolding works in the same way in pedagogy: it is a temporary, but necessary help of the teacher in supporting students to successfully complete tasks, so that later the student can complete a similar task independently.
Task 4. Look at the types of scaffolding and put number from 1 – 7 indicating the most frequently used type of scaffolding to the least.
Task 6. Identify an appropriate type of scaffolding in the teachers’ speeches.
Task 7. Complete the situations with phrases a – f. Define the type of scaffolding and explain its use in the situations. Each correct answer – 1 point.
