"Just Do It" exercises by Yulia Polivoda (Student's Work)

We've all heard the famous Nike slogan, "Just Do It!" It's a phrase that inspires action, encourages taking risks, and pushing oneself to new limits. In the realm of language learning, applying this mindset can make the process both engaging and effective. In this lesson, we'll be exploring sports vocabulary by adding a dash of fun and playfulness to the learning experience.

Show What You Know: Adding Verbs to Sports

Let's kick things off by adding the verbs "do," "go," or "play" to a list of sports. The goal is to not just know the sports but to understand how language interacts with the activities we love.

 •   ____ basketball, golf, squash, table tennis, volleyball;

 •   ____ canoeing, cycling, sailing, skating, skiing;

 •   ____ athletics, boxing, judo, karate, kung fu.

Just Do It! Identifying Sports in Photos

Moving on to a more visual aspect, the next challenge is to name the sports in photos A-F. This task enhances our ability to recognize and label different activities, reinforcing our connection between words and real-world scenarios.

Just Do It! Ball Sports Brainstorming

Now, let's pair up and brainstorm other ball sports. Engaging in conversation about what we can and can't do with a ball not only reinforces vocabulary but also encourages communication and collaboration. Here's a glimpse into what this might look like:

Partner 1: "In basketball, you can bounce the ball. You can pass it and catch it, but you can't kick it."

Partner 2: "True! How about soccer? You can kick the ball and score goals, but you can't use your hands like in basketball."

In the spirit of "Just Do It," our exploration into sports vocabulary has been more than a mere lesson—it's been a dynamic experience. From integrating verbs into sports to identifying them in visuals and brainstorming new ideas, we've embraced language learning as an active, enjoyable pursuit.
